Books from Canada

I went to this book store in Whitehorse and found some great books.

a northern alphabet

The first one is “a northern alphabet” by Ted Harrison. It caught my eye because it looks so simple with Helvetica and this colourful picture. It’s an alphabet book, each letter has a picture with such vibrant unrealistic colours and these thick black lines. Harrison is the Yukon’s most famous illustrator for children’s books. And the illustrations give you an idea of what is life in the north like.

Captain Bly

I also found this self published cartoon book by Jerome Stueart; it’s called Captain Bly. There’s a tag on the cover that says Limited Early Edition of “Polar Bonds”. It’s a collection of cartoons about a polar bear who is bringing up his little son. He seems to be really worried about him and wonders if he is doing things right. I never thought fathers could be like this too. I really love the drawings and I like that Stueart not only used the usual comic panels. It’s like he often breaks our of this panel cage and shows things happening outside the story or in a different place and time.

No Girls Allowed Cover

Another book for children is “No Girls Allowed” written by Susan Hughes and illustrated by Willow Dawson. It includes 7 stories of women in history that disguised as men to achieve their goals. What struck me most is the fact that there have always been women who fought in wars dressed as men. The illustrations are beautiful like woodcuts and I like that women and girls always have a circle on their cheek. I guess it’s for visualizing red cheeks.

Puddle Jumpers, Barbara Lavallee

Then I found some great postcards by Barbara Lavallee, shes an Alaskan painter. Most pictures are about female, colourful and chubby characters. Lavallee is an illustrator for children’s books too.
